Charity Begins was started in 2006 when two travelers, heading to Peru for vacation, used their extra luggage space to carry shoes to a local non-profit in Lima. Upon returning to the U.S. a concept was born - to help other travelers do the same.
Those two travelers, Jennifer and John, are now married! Here is their story...
Jennifer is a marketing professional who spent twelve years in the heart of New York City working for a major media company. Her career gave her the opportunity to explore the United States from coast to coast while planning events for the magazine industry. In 2004, after a successful career as Event Marketing Director for FORTUNE magazine, she decided that her wanderlust was stronger than her ties to New York City and before long her bag was packed for a solo trip around the world. First stop...Malaysia.
The trip, lovingly nicknamed "Jens Journey" lasted for eleven months and touched on twelve countries in Asia. The journey introduced her to many different people, religions and cultures and was enhanced by volunteer work at Laliguran's Womens Center in Nepal, and a brief teaching assignment in Cambodia.
John is an account executive for a leading fashion footwear company. His passion for travel has taken him to Cuba, Italy, Sri Lanka, Canada, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Iceland, Sweden, Mexico and many other countries.
John and Jennifer met in 2004 on a blind date in New York’s Central Park knowing that only four weeks later "Jens Journey" would begin. In July 2004, a heart broken Jennifer packed her bag, as planned, and left for Asia. Thanks to email and instant messenger John and Jennifer managed to keep in touch for the year. And, their adventurous spirits reunited them that Thanksgiving for a short vacation in the gorgeous country of Sri Lanka.
It has been over seven years since Jennifer’s return from Asia. She is now working as the Communications Director for a non-profit in Maryland and is also an event and marketing consultant. John continues his career as an account executive. They live in Crofton, Maryland.
They share a passion for travel and a desire to make the world a better place.
